Google is rolling out Matter support for recent Nest thermostats

Google will add Matter support to Nest thermostats. It only concerns the thermostats that were released after 2020. The devices are therefore compatible with, among other things, Apple’s Homekit. There are currently few devices that support Matter.

Google writes on a support page that Matter compatibility for Nest thermostats is coming. It is installed with a software update. This does not happen immediately for every user; Google is talking about ‘the coming weeks’.

According to Google, the update only applies to the Nest devices that were released in 2020. However, there are also many older thermostats that are much more widespread, such as the Nest 3rd Generation and the Thermostat E which is especially popular in Europe. Google previously indicated that ‘Nest thermostats’ would receive the Matter update, but the company did not mention specific models at the time.

Google already announced on the same support page last year that it would move Matter to more Android – and smart home devices. Other Nest devices, including the Mini, Audio and Hub, have already received the standard. The thermostats cannot now function as a hub, but can be controlled via a Matter device. These can also be devices such as those with Apple Homekit.

Matter is a universal smart home standard that various tech companies are working on .
