Contrary to what one might think, time travel is not that impractical … some physicists even agree that traveling into the future is “possible”.
Back to the Future, Men in Black, Terminator, Looper, Deja Vu … time travel is very present in the seventh art and fascinates everyone as much as it intrigues. According to physicists, it would not be that fictitious.
The trip to the past? Complicated…
For many, this is the hardest thing to imagine. Most physicists believe this to be impractical. However, there is a way of doing it that brings together the experts.
This method uses a strange concept called a ” wormhole “. What is a wormhole? Difficult to say, because it does not exist. Finally … we do not know if it exists. It is a concept imagined by Albert Einstein .
These are hypothetical objects that would connect two places like a tunnel. But it goes even further. Instead of connecting two places, it would connect two regions of space-time. This would then make it possible to move faster on the condition of traveling faster than the speed of light.
Suffice to say that it is close to fiction, especially since we do not know if these wormholes exist. And even if they did exist, could we get through it?
Travel to the future? Probable!
Unlike the trip to the past, which divides physicists, the trip to the future is unanimous among scientists. In a video for Business Insider , Brian Greene, professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University in New York, explains how this is being envisioned.
“We know how to do it because Einstein showed us the way over a hundred years ago. He showed that if you go out into space and travel at the speed of light, and you turn around and back, your The clock will move more slowly. So when you come back it will be the future on planet Earth. You will then have traveled into the future. ”
A method which seems feasible, on condition of traveling at the speed of light, that is to say at 299 792 458 m / s … Otherwise, Einstein (always him) imagined another possibility. If you approach the edge of a source with strong gravity, like a black hole , but really stop at the edge of it, time would slow down for you relative to everyone else. If you come back to Earth then it will be in the future.
Machines for time travel?
Man has always dreamed of a “time machine”. This is often seen as a craft, object, or car as in Back to the Future. But none of them turned out to be even plausible.
Yet Ron Mallett, an American astrophysicist , is sure it is possible. He has spent a long portion of his life studying time travel theories. Today, he is convinced he has the answer.
His idea is to “twist” time in a loop with a laser beam. Thus, it would be possible to travel to the past and then come back to the present, going around the loop. He created a prototype but lacks funds to carry out tests. Utopia or reality?
