Apple is being sued for discrimination in Apple Watch measurements

Apple is sued in the United States for discrimination with the Apple Watch. According to the prosecutor, the Saturation app in the smartwatch does not properly register the amount of oxygen in the blood in people with dark skin.

According to Apple Insider, the lawsuit was filed in New York by Alex Morale, Apple Insider reports. Morales claims that researchers have shown that the Apple Watch is less able to measure blood oxygen levels in people with a dark complexion. Morales believes that Apple has not informed its customers about this and is therefore breaking the law.

Reporting oxygen percentages incorrectly can be dangerous, according to Morales. People can get good values through their Apple Watch, while they are not correct. The lawsuit states that the pandemic has made it clear that the measurements by the Saturation app deviate in people with a dark skin color.

It is not the first time that the Apple Watch does not measure properly. In 2015, Apple was discredited because the heart rate monitor worked less well for people who have a tattoo on their wrist. Apple eventually confirmed this and advised people against using an Apple watch if the wearer has a tattoo in that spot.
