Bloomberg: Apple wants to turn iPhone lockscreen into a smart display in iOS 17

The iOS 17 update will have the option of turning the lock screen into a ‘smart display’, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This means that calendar events and notifications, among other things, immediately become visible, without having to unlock the phone first.

Gurman writes based on conversations with insiders that there is The iOS 17 operating system comes with an interface that “displays information such as calendar appointments, weather and notifications in the style of a smart home display.” This only happens when the screen is locked and in the horizontal position. This is supposed to make the phone more usable when it’s on a desk or bedside table. The background darkens, while the letters are brighter for better readability.

Gurman compares it to the display of the Google Nest Hub, the Amazon Fire tablets and the Android 10 lock screen. Although he says that the latter is “more basic” than that of iOS 17. According to Gurman, Apple is also working on “a similar interface” for the iPad, although the Bloomberg journalist expects it to appear only after the iPhone update. iOS 17 will be announced at the WWDC developer conference on June 5.
