ChatGPT makes Bing the default search engine for referrals and recent info

ChatGPT will use Bing as default search engine. That means that ChatGPT gets references to websites and data sources. More recent information can also be displayed.

Microsoft says at developer conference Build that it has partnered with ChatGPT creator OpenAI for that. With the addition of Bing as a search engine, users can see not only the generated answer during a search, but also references to the sources where that information comes from. That’s one of ChatGPT’s biggest shortcomings right now; users cannot verify that the information is correct and cannot click through to a recent resource. Bing Chat does. That search engine function again uses ChatGPT.

The search engine addition also makes it possible to find more recent information. ChatGPT is trained on data up to September 2021 and therefore cannot display recent information. Bing was already able to do that.

The feature is immediately available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus. The default search engine will also be available to all free users at a later date, but the companies do not say when that should happen.
