Sony lowers PS VR2 delivery expectations after disappointing preorders

Sony has lowered delivery expectations for its PlayStation VR2 headset after disappointing presales. Sources report this to financial news agency Bloomberg. The company may also reduce production of the headset.

Sources tell Bloomberg that Sony has cut its original expectations for PS VR2 shipments in half. The company now expects to ship one million units in the headset’s first quarter. Initially, Sony hoped to have deliver two million PlayStation VR2 headsets. Sony would have made the reductions after disappointing pre-sales.

Sony has now told a supplier that it can ‘expect fewer orders’ for the screens used in the headset. With this, Sony is expected to reduce the production of its new VR headset. The manufacturer now plans to ship 1.5 million headsets in the coming fiscal year. That number could be further revised down depending on demand, the sources say. Sony has not responded to questions from Bloomberg.

The PlayStation VR2 releases February 22 for $600. The headset, which only works in combination with a PS5 console, became available for preorder in November by invitation. Later, the headset became generally available for presale.
