The Meta Quest 3, the forthcoming virtual reality glasses from the Facebook parent company, will get color real-world passthrough. That means users can see the real world without taking off the headset.
Meta chairman Mark Zuckerberg confirmed this while discussing the latest quarterly results earlier this week, that’s how UploadVR caught. Zuckerberg calls the functionality “Meta Reality,” which means using two black-and-white cameras to create a three-dimensional image of the environment and a single color camera to fill in the colors in that image. Applications and games can also use this functionality. For example, a board game or a round of golf can be played in AR.
The Meta Quest Pro, the 1800 euro VR headset for professionals, already has that functionality, but its counterpart for consumers, the Oculus Quest 2, does not have that. The Meta Quest 3 should therefore change that.
Meta previously announced that the new Quest should be released late in 2023 for a price somewhere between $ 300 to $ 500, UploadVR writes further. Predecessor Oculus Quest 2 dates from early 2021.
Further official information about the Meta Quest 3 is not yet available, but in September last year a alleged set of Meta Quest 3 CAD files have come out. Analyst Brad Lynch, who released the images, shared a number of possible specifications of the headset. Because the headsets in the Quest series have their own socs on board, they can also be used as standalone, without cables.
