Foxconn invests in new Indian factory for production of iPhones

The Taiwanese Foxconn, which is known for iPhone production, among other things, is investing 700 million dollars in a factory in Karnataka, India. That factory should provide 100,000 jobs for the country and means that Apple will become less dependent on China for the production of iPhones.

According to the government, the 300-hectare factory will actually produce iPhones, Reuters writes . Apple’s phones are already being produced at two other locations in the country. That’s where the new factory comes in. About 5 to 7 percent of iPhones now come from India, but if it is up to the government of that country, that will be increased to 25 percent. It is not known when the factory can open its doors.

Apple has been dealing with shortages in the production of iPhones in recent months. That was due to the corona pandemic; a Foxconn factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou was unable to run at full capacity due to a lockdown. That lasted nearly a year and prompted Apple to warn of extended delivery times for its latest iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. In addition, Apple may want to make itself less vulnerable to the political tensions between the United States and China.
