Google says on its blog that Immersive View will be available in the coming months for Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice. The company does not say when exactly these cities will be added. From Wednesday, the feature will be available for the cities of London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo.
If the feature is available for Amsterdam, it will be possible, for example, to view the Rijksmuseum from the outside in 3D. view during a selectable time of day, changing lighting and weather conditions. Users can also zoom out to enter a random eatery from street level, as if you were walking through it. At the moment it is already possible to view the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum from the inside in Maps.
Google uses neural radiance fields for the feature. According to the company, this is an AI technique that transforms regular images into 3D representations. According to Google, this makes it possible to provide an accurate representation of a place, including the correct lighting, the visible structure of materials and the background. In this way, it should be possible for users to see whether the type of lighting in a cafe suits their preferences, which should help them decide whether or not to go there.
Immersive View can be considered as a combination of Street View and Google Earth, where not only cities can be viewed in 3d, but buildings can also be viewed from the inside. This feature has been available for some time, but until now was limited to viewing certain landmarks around the world.
