KPN will replace customers’ older SIM cards with new ones in the coming months. These are SIM cards that are not suitable for 4G or 5G networks. The provider wants to permanently switch off the 2G network at the end of next year.
The provider says it will phase out the outdated SIM cards from April to June. The SIM cards must be replaced before July 1, because the company will then adjust ‘a number of network settings’. As a result, the 2G SIM cards will no longer work from that moment on. KPN will inform customers by letter, e-mail, text message or telephone about disabling the 2G SIM cards. The provider also has a web page that allows customers to check whether their SIM card supports 4G or 5G networks .
KPN wants on December 1 Stop the 2G network by 2025, so that the 2G frequencies can be used for 4G and 5G. Odido already stopped using 2G last year. Vodafone has not yet announced an end date. This provider only says that the 2G network is ‘will in any case remain available until the end of 2024‘.
