Photos show Tesla HW4 platform with enhanced autonomous driving system

New images and details of Tesla’s upcoming HW4 computer system have emerged. The platform will include support for more cameras and a radar system for autonomous driving. In addition, HW4 features an improved soc.

Details about the Tesla HW4 computer system were posted on Twitter shared by green, who writes about Tesla more often. Green would have obtained the system early from a Model X. A teardown shows that the system includes a new soc for autonomous driving. According to the Twitter user, this is still based on Samsung’s Exynos IP, but the number of cores has been increased from 12 to 20. Those cores are divided into five clusters of four cores each and must reach clock speeds of up to 2.35 GHz. At idle, the clock speed should be 1.37GHz. Furthermore, the number of TRIP cores has been increased from two to three, says the leaker. Each system has two of these socs for independent driving.

The platform also has support for more cameras. The board has twelve camera connectors, one of which serves as a spare. Current Teslas have eight cameras. Additional cameras would be placed in the windscreen and bumpers, among other things. Green also found a Phoenix radar. Rumors have been circulating for some time that Tesla would add a 4D radar for its self-driving systems. Rather, the company moved away from that, in favor of a system that is entirely based on cameras. There is also a new triband GPS system in HW4.

In addition, the structure of the rest of the system must be slightly simplified. The GPU for the infotainment system is no longer on a separate daughter board, as was the case with the current HW3 platform. Instead, the GPU is integrated on the motherboard. The platform also has the same AMD CPU and GPU for the infotainment system and the system will again have 16GB of memory and 256GB of NVMe storage. old Teslas can be placed. Musk previously confirmed that existing Teslas cannot be equipped with HW4. Tesla has not yet officially announced details about its HW4 platform. The company may do so soon, because cars are already being produced in which the new system is integrated. Tesla is holding an Investor Day event for shareholders on March 1.

Tesla is said to have already received permission to use HW4 in Europe. This is evident from documents that were recently published by RDW , the Dutch organization that regulates the registration of vehicles in the Netherlands. It already talked about the arrival of a fourth-generation vehicle control system for autonomous driving, but at that time it did not contain any technical details about HW4.
