Sony shipped 7.1 million PlayStation 5 units in the quarter. That is considerably more than in previous quarters. With this, Sony finally seems to be able to meet the demand for its console, more than two years after its release.
Until recently, the quarter with the highest number of deliveries was that in which the PS5 was released: the fourth quarter of 2020. Sony then delivered 4.5 million units. In the holiday quarter of 2021, it came to 3.4 million copies. Sony recently said that the PS5 would be more available.
Deliveries are somewhat behind those of the PS4 at the same point in the console’s cycle. Then Sony came to 8.4 million copies of that console. Furthermore, the deliveries of the PS4 and PS5 have been more or less the same so far.
Sony also says that more people have started buying games on discs. Six months ago, 79 percent of games sold were downloads, now that has dropped to 62 percent. Over the whole of 2021, it was 66 percent. Sony does not yet give a percentage for the whole of 2022, because the company’s fiscal year lasts until the end of March.
