Ziggo wants to offer internet with higher speeds from 2025 through Docsis 4.0

The Dutch cable company VodafoneZiggo wants to offer faster internet from 2025 thanks to Docsis 4.0. That says the company to Tweakers. The cable operator recently tested Docsis 4.0 on its network for the first time. This happened at a location in Amsterdam.

VodafoneZiggo used two Docsis 4.0 routers in the test setup, which together with a Docsis 3.1 modem achieved a throughput of 15Gbit/s. The Docsis 4.0 routers separately reached about 6.5 Gbit/s. The upload speed of the Docsis 4.0 routers seemed to be the same as the Docsis 3.1 routers: around 0.5Gbit/s. In recent years, the cable operator has upgraded the entire network to Docsis 3.1, which enables download speeds of up to 1Gbit/s. The cable company claims that with Docsis 4.0 speeds will be ten times faster.

The cable company claims that this is the first test with Docsis 4.0 on a live network. The intention is to do more tests next year, a spokesperson told . “We have now started testing the first components in our network and in 2024 this will be followed by field tests, tests on a larger scale. The roll-out is planned from 2025 onwards, region by region, as with our Gigabit rollout, the timeline will depend on the timelines our suppliers adhere to and when the necessary components become available.” Those components include modems for customers.
