Samsung Display has shown an OLED screen with built-in fingerprint scanner and built-in hardware to measure blood pressure and stress levels. It is a roll-out screen. It’s unclear if the screen will make it into a product.
The screen is 0.5cm high when rolled up, but it can be rolled out to about 25cm, Samsung Display claims. The conglomerate’s division shows its screen at the DisplayWeek event, which is currently taking place in the United States. Due to the size, the screen is most similar to a tablet. The prototype is called Rollable Flex.
Users can have their fingerprint recognized on the entire screen. That differs from fingerprint scanners under current OLED screens. They work with separate cameras that are located under a small part of the screen. Also, the entire screen can measure blood pressure. Samsung mentions that this technique works best with more than one finger. The software uses reflection of light from the screen to estimate blood pressure.
There are few details about the screen. It is also unclear whether there are manufacturers that will put this technology in products in the near future. Samsung Display is often early in showing prototypes, after which it can sometimes take years before they become products.
